Viral/HM build works for both firing modes. In auto fire mode, the crit damage is a bit low, but it is compensated by the high crit chance, high status chance and high slash damage, which means that you will get more slash and viral procs than other auto rifles, so the damage is actually comparable. [Vile Acceleration] is also a large damage increase because of its good ammo economy and very fast reload speed.

In charge fire mode, [Point Strike] alone gets you to 100% crit chance, getting maximum consistency from HM. Dual status mods get you to 70% status chance which is also great, since consistency is the most important issue with single-shot weapons. Fire rate is absolutely mandatory for the charge fire, otherwise prepare to see your squadmates cleaning out the entire room before you get to fire a single shot.
