My current primary build (with riven)

This build is not optimized to be the highest damage, and doesn't use [Hunter Munitions]. Against Steel Path grineer, it feels better to mostly just use my [Kuva Nukor] and melt faces, but this build can do it if needed, and it's more than enough damage anywhere else. The main point of the build is to enable clean, fast, and fun play, and to provide a longer-range alternative weapon to pair with any of the many very strong secondary weapons everybody likes (lookin at you [Kuva Nukor]). To that end, the main goal is very high and consistent damage, along with a little bit of utility to improve the overall playstyle. [Amalgam Serration] is used since the damage loss is very minimal, especially since we use heavy cal, and the movespeed is very noticeable. I also use [Shred] with this specific riven mod, because opticors really benefit from punchthrough, which I explain below. If you have a lot of punchthrough on your riven instead, you can use [Vile Acceleration] instead of [Shred].

The preferred riven mod has at least 167% crit chance for the opt vandal. Note that on market sites and other previews, the regular [Opticor]'s riven values will be shown which will be a little higher than for the [Opticor Vandal]. 167% on riven plus [Point Strike] will get 100% crit chance, which is important for consistently hitting your damage and not getting any "dud" shots. Since you're firing slow with this weapon, you really feel every time your shots don't crit and you do less than 20% of your normal damage. Multishot is the next most important for the same reason: more shots is more chances to crit, and you want to have total multishot over 2 to guarantee at least 2 shots coming out. This is naturally less important if you can get your crit over 100%.

"The [Opticor] gets 1m punchthrough by default, why more punchthrough?" After playing with the [Opticor] a while, I think punchthrough is actually critical for this weapon. This is for a few reasons. (1) the [Opticor] shoots a deceptively wide beam, and it is very easy for it to clip terrain, doodads, and other unwanted targets. The [Opticor] has 1m punchthrough by default but in many cases this is not enough to prevent a shot from becoming a dud on a doorframe, box corner, etc. (2) Because of the charge-up mechanic, your shot is released a little bit after you decide to start firing. Lots of things can happen in this time even if it's a short charge-up, such as the target taking cover, nontargets getting up in your face to obstruct your shot, and so on. Punchthrough resolves this problem by simply shooting straight through these obstacles when they appear. (3) The [Opticor] shoots relatively slowly, and when you're not releasing shots you're charging them, so you know a shot is coming soon. The weakness of slow shots gives you time to line up more precise shots, both with your aim and with your character's location. Lots of punchthrough on the wide beam can allow you to hit surprisingly large numbers of enemy units with a single shot by taking that chargup time to line up excellent shots. My previous riven mod had only +118.5 multishot and +3.6 punchthrough (and negative zoom), and it felt very good to play with since you could shoot through pretty much any kind of cover enemies would try to use. Using [Shred] instead is not as good, but gets most of the way there. There are definitely still times I wish I had more punchthrough, but overall I feel having far fewer duds with 93% crit instead of 60% crit is absolutely worth it.
