Excalibur Umbra: Fire Blast/Shuriken/Empower- General Use

Excalibur Gameplay Guide

[Excalibur] is heavily focused on melee damage and his defensive options are limited to crowd control abilities or sources outside of his kit. He gets a small bonus to certain melee weapons but the majority of his kit is focused on increasing the effectiveness of his [Exalted Blade]. With the right mod configuration and some basic knowledge of external defensive tools he can complete most missions in this melee oriented meta.

[Excalibur Umbra] is a free upgrade to the base [Excalibur] so we'll be using him for the baseline of all Excalibur guides. Additional information about this is in the notes section near the end of this guide.

📝 Build Overview 📝

[Excalibur] has a fairly balanced kit if you're looking to complete various star chart missions. This build focuses on the [Exalted Blade] augment [Chromatic Blade] while utilizing the large effective health pool boost from the Umbral set mods granted to you after unlocking Excalibur Umbra.

🔢 Helminth Options 🔢

Slash Dash is the weakest ability in this setup and doesn't provide reasonable returns even if you're using a melee stat stick. Javelin isn't a great ability without the augment but losing out on the ability to even slot in the augment is a massive downside.

Fire Blast provides reasonable armor stripping with some crowd control potential. Pillage and Terrify have similar uses but require far more ability Strength to compete.

Shuriken is another option to strip armor but requires an additional augment.

Empower boosts the damage from [Exalted Blade] and synergizes with [Furious Javelin] builds that focus on greed over sustainability.

[Xata]'s Whisper provides the same effect as Radial [Howl] in dealing with Sentient adaptive resistances but it can be used to double down on Sentient counterplay.

Roar, Warcry, and other damage buffs are good options against unarmored enemies or can be used when your kit has other ways of stripping armor.

Elemental Ward, Defy, and other defensive buffs have some practical use on a build that focuses on raw health rather than shield gating.

Fire Walker, Spellbind, and other quality of life buffs can fill in any defensive gaps that you can't get from the mods in your loadout.

Other abilities are decent but provide a lot of redundancy due to the existence of operator mode and the previously mentioned abilities.

📊 Ability Stats 📊

Strength is the primary stat on this build with Duration and Efficiency given a small boost. Range isn't touched as there just isn't enough mod slots to fit it in while using the entire Umbral mod set.

⏲️ Duration ⏲️

Duration slightly assists our energy economy and gives Radial [Howl] a slightly longer window to crowd control enemies. If you're confident in your energy economy then Primed Continuity is a flex mod.

⛽ Efficiency ⛽

Efficiency is boosted to keep your energy economy in check. If you're confident with relying on outside energy recovery you can treat Streamline as a flex mod.

📏 Range 📏

Range isn't touched because it's the weakest mainline stat and we don't have enough mod slots to increase it. If you want slightly more range on your abilities you can replace a flex mod with Stretch or Augur Reach.

💪 Strength 💪

Strength is necessary for [Exalted Blade] to be a competitive option over meta melee weapons. Chromatic Blade needs at least 189% Strength to have 100% status chance but anything over that is perfectly fine.

↔️ Alternate Playstyles ↔️

Most builds utilize tools that can be swapped out to serve the same purpose albeit in a different manner. The following suggestions are an outline and aren't exhaustive.

🔧 Mods 🔧

  • [Growing Power] is easy to proc and provides free ability Strength. It's a weak source of Strength in this setup so it can be replaced with any other aura.
  • [Power Drift] grants a bit of Strength and quality of life through the knockdown resistance. It's the weakest source of Strength in this setup so it can be replaced with any other exilus mod of your choosing.
  • [Primed Continuity] and [Streamline] are flex mods if you're confident with your energy economy or if you're relying on outside sources of energy regeneration.
  • [Transient Fortitude] can be replace with [Blind Rage] if you're playing with multiple sources of energy regeneration that still work when a channeled ability is active like Dispensary or Arcane Energize.
  • Umbral Set mods are easy to fit on any [Excalibur Umbra] as he starts with three Umbral polarized slots. Replacing them can be done if you're using cheap mods like anything in the Augur set but you'll lose a large chunk of effective health and Strength.
  • [Chromatic Blade] is necessary for [Exalted Blade] to consistently do status procs. Furious Javelin is another strong augment that can be used instead of a flex mod for extremely greedy damage.

⚙️ Arcanes ⚙️

Arcane Energize synergizes with [Primed Flow] and keeps your energy topped off. It can be replaced if you have other strong forms of energy recovery either through abilities or other energy support frames. Offensive arcanes like Arcane Avenger or Arcane [Fury] are usually the call.

Arcane Strike gives melee weapons a large damage per second boost which synergizes with [Exalted Blade]. Some builds won't be able to utilize it so it can be replaced with other arcanes. Tertiary defensive arcanes like Arcane Aegis or Arcane Guardian are usually the call.

📋 Final Notes 📋

[Excalibur Umbra] is a direct upgrade to the base [Excalibur] as it shares all of the same abilities other than Radial Blind. It's given to all players for completing a necessary story quest so we have all [Excalibur] builds using the Umbral variant. This limits modding potential due to the existence of three Umbral polarized slots but most builds have minimal impact.

[Excalibur] has a passive that increases the damage and attack speed of some melee weapons by a small amount. Listing off every single weapon would significantly increase the size of this guide but a good rule of thumb is that it applies to most swords that can be held in one hand. This passive applies to [Excalibur Umbra] even though he also has the Sentience passive.

[Excalibur Umbra]'s passive requires a meta weapon to compete against most endgame enemies. He will prefer to use his primary weapon but he will switch to his secondary and melee weapon in certain scenarios. Tailor these weapons appropriately to the mission as a bad mod configuration can significantly hinder the Specter's ability to function.

Tau resistance from the Umbral set mods can be combined with [Adaptation] to grant you complete immunity to Sentient attacks. This has a reasonable chance of being patched if Sentient focused content is released so be wary of this interaction in future updates.
