Ember: Roar/Eclipse/Xata's Whisper - Damage Buffs

Ember Gameplay Guide

[Ember] utilizes Immolation's thermometer to give her abilities various offensive and defensive properties. This grants her damage reduction, armor stripping, and powerful heat procs to deal with various levels of difficult content. She struggles against enemies immune to heat but a balanced loadout can deal with that issue.

📝 Build Overview 📝

[Ember] can utilize her innate armor stripping along with damage buffs to apply extremely powerful heat procs (Ignite) to enemies. This build focuses specifically on making her weapons shine rather than trying to use her abilities due to an issue that's explained in the notes section at the bottom of this guide.

🔢 Helminth Options 🔢

Fireball is usually replaced as it's the weakest ability in her kit but here we have to replace Inferno to fit in her augment. If you aren't using [Fireball Frenzy] then you should go back to replacing Fireball.

Roar provides a faction damage bonus to all attacks with synergizes with her Ignite damage focus. It can also be used to stack powerful slash procs (Bleed) on enemies.

Eclipse is conceptually the strongest damage buff in the game but it has some inconsistency due to reliance on lighting in different tilesets. If you're confident in you ability to stay well lit areas then it's the best choice.

[Xata]'s Whisper doesn't provide the same support for her Ignite damage but it does allow her to deal with Sentient or other enemies with total Heat immunity. Eximus enemies with Heat resistance are common in some missions so it may be your only other option to do damage if you've entirely focused on Ignite.

Nourish, Smite, and Shock all provide elemental bonuses but they don't synergize with her focus on Ignite damage. They can actually lower her damage against some enemies due to the calculations for status procs and their status weighting.

Other hybrid damage buffs like Warcry or Elemental Ward are decent options against easier content but their scaling falls off when compared to the buffs listed above.

📊 Ability Stats 📊

Duration and Strength are the two primary stats when making a damage buffing build. Efficiency is boosted by a bit as she also needs to use her other abilities to strip armor when using Ignite rather than Bleed as it isn't True damage.

Helminth Invigorations, Arbitration Buffs, Ally Abilities, Arcanes, and other external stat boosts can save you multiple mod slots but may rely on specific team compositions, loadouts, or sheer luck. Plan around these situations and modify your loadout to hit desired ability stat breakpoints.

⏲️ Duration ⏲️

Duration is boosted by the the strongest sources to let her spend more time attacking enemies and less time recasting her buffs. It also slightly helps her energy economy. [Narrow Minded] can be replaced to give more Range back to Fire Blast but it will nearly halve the total duration of her abilities.

⛽ Efficiency ⛽

Efficiency is increased by a bit to accommodate the additional buffs. Roar is fairly expensive while Eclipse is barely a fraction of the cost. [Streamline] is a flex mod when using cheaper abilities and Blind Rage can be added if you're confident in your energy economy.

📏 Range 📏

Range is lowered by [Narrow Minded] and her buffs are more selfish than they are helpful to her team. Narrow Minded can be replaced to get more Range back but adding additional Range past that point shouldn't be necessary.

💪 Strength 💪

Strength is increased to benefit her buffs and Immolation's base damage reduction. [Blind Rage] can be added over [Primed Continuity] but your energy economy may suffer without some form of strong energy regeneration. [Transient Fortitude] can be replaced instead to gain a small Strength bonus but the overall energy economy will still be lowered even after the refunded Duration.

↔️ Alternate Playstyles ↔️

Most builds utilize tools that can be swapped out to serve the same purpose albeit in a different manner. The following suggestions are an outline and aren't exhaustive.

🔧 Mods 🔧

  • [Growing Power] is easy to use on a frame focused on status procs. The Strength may be a bit redundant in some build variants so it can be replaced with anything as you see fit.
  • [Power Drift] gives a bit of Strength and some minor defensive synergy from the knockdown resistance. Primed Sure Footed is stronger but requires a different polarity plan.
  • [Streamline] and [Narrow Minded] are flex mods depending on the cost of your subsumed ability and your Range needs to strip armor. Replace them with additional survivability or a middle ground of Duration through Augur Message or Constitution.
  • [Rolling Guard] should provide plenty of survivability in all content. It can be replaced against lower level enemies but this build is usually overkill in those situations anyway.
  • [Fireball Frenzy] provides additional heat to add more Ignite damage to her weapons. Other augments provide better quality but the damage loss usually isn't worth it. Bleed damage won't need this augment but Ember isn't a good Bleed damage candidate due to her base kit.

⚙️ Arcanes ⚙️

Arcane Energize synergizes with [Primed Flow] and keeps your energy topped off. It can be replaced if you have other strong forms of energy recovery either through abilities or other energy support frames. Offensive arcanes like Arcane Avenger or Arcane [Fury] are usually the call.

Arcane Strike provides more damage per second to a meta that heavily focuses on melee weapons. It can be replaced on builds that focus on Primary or Secondary weapons instead. Tertiary offensive arcane like Arcane Rage or Arcane Precision are usually the call.

📋 Final Notes 📋

Immolation's heat thermometer requires diligent maintenance for maximum efficiency. Inferno gives free heat generation when used with no targets on the screen but this can cause the meter to build too quickly and force you to spam Fire Blast. On setups that favor spamming Inferno you may need to reset Immolation periodically as the heat generation is higher than your Fire Blast casting speed.

Fire Blast and Immolation don't require more than the baseline Strength to properly do their maximum effects. However this requires you to spend more time generating heat which can have counter intuitive synergy with builds that completely focus on weapons rather than abilities. Her passive can get free Strength from nearby enemies taking Ignite damage but this becomes inconsistent if they die before you cast an ability.

In a cruel sense of irony, [Ember] can actually lower the damage from heat procs (Ignite) done by your allies. Ignite damage is scaled by the faction damage and heat mods from both the original heat proc and additional heat procs that add to the duration. [Ember] can't natively use Heat or faction mods on her abilities so this will cause all further heat procs from meta weapons to do a fraction of their Ignite damage. Roar partially alleviates this problem but be mindful of this issue when using Ember against high level enemies that are weak to Heat as you can become a massive detriment to your allies.
