Baruuk: Null Star/Dispensary/Gloom - Damage Reduction

Baruuk Gameplay Guide

[Baruuk] utilizes several forms of damage reduction and mild crowd control to survive attacks while eroding his Restraint passive. This passive meter can either be used as fuel for Serene Storm or another source of damage reduction.

📝 Build Overview 📝

[Baruuk] has several forms of damage reduction in his kit and this build adds a few more to exponentially increase his survivability. This limits his damage but meta weapons can easily make up for the loss.

🔢 Helminth Options 🔢

Lull is replaced as it's far too inconsistent in eroding Restraint with high Duration. Elude has issues with consistency but in this build it isn't expensive and has some viability even with less than optimal Range values.

Null Star is the strongest defensive ability available when using high Duration. It has some consistency issues in melee range but this can be solved by using the augment.

Dispensary provides free health, energy, and ammo for passive playstyles. It doesn't have the level of survivability from other abilities but flex mods can be used to run additional defensive mods to make up the difference.

Gloom can be used to either grant a large life stealing bonus or to crowd control enemies. It requires a very specific stat spread to handle the latter role effectively on any [Baruuk] build.

Quiver allows you to play completely passive. It doesn't synergize with [Baruuk]'s kit but it can be used to keep allies or objectives safe.

Quality of life abilities like Fire Walker or Spellbind can be used to fill defensive gaps against some enemies. Primed Sure Footed should fill this role but they're solid abilities if you don't have access to it yet.

📊 Ability Stats 📊

Duration is the most important stat but it can vary depending on the subsumed ability. Efficiency and Strength are kept around the baseline as they don't have a significant impact on the build. Range is lowered by [Narrow Minded] even if it has negative synergy.

Helminth Invigorations, Arbitration Buffs, Ally Abilities, Arcanes, and other external stat boosts can save you multiple mod slots but may rely on specific team compositions, loadouts, or sheer luck. Plan around these situations and modify your loadout to hit desired ability stat breakpoints.

⏲️ Duration ⏲️

Duration is boosted to keep the energy economy in check. [Narrow Minded] also has the benefit of lowering the Range on Desolate Hands so that they don't constantly fly off and hit enemies and lower your damage reduction. Elude has negative synergy with [Narrow Minded] but it's still viable to erode Restraint by blocking with a melee weapon. Replace it for anything that fits into the polarity plan if the Range loss is against your playstyle.

⛽ Efficiency ⛽

Efficiency isn't touched as the energy economy is fine without adding any mods. Flex mods can be replaced with [Streamline] or [Fleeting Expertise] depending on which subsumed ability is chosen. [Blind Rage] doesn't benefit the build as much as Restraint is intentionally kept eroded to utilize the increased damage reduction.

📏 Range 📏

Range is lowered by [Narrow Minded] and we don't run mods to bring it back to the baseline. Elude has negative synergy with this setup but Desolate Hands has some positive synergy to make up for it. Elude can still be used if you utilize blocking with a melee weapon to face your camera towards the enemies as much as possible. It's an inconsistent ability even with max Range due to many attacks being considered area of effects damage which can't be evaded. Replace [Narrow Minded] with any other flex mod if Range is a serious issue but it isn't suggested to use additional mods to increase Range due to the previously mentioned inconsistency.

💪 Strength 💪

Strength is slightly boosted to give Desolate Hands the maximum 90% damage reduction with an extra dagger charge for safety. Serene Storm's damage reduction also gets boosted by Strength bonuses but it burns Restraint so only use it in emergencies.

↔️ Alternate Playstyles ↔️

Most builds utilize tools that can be swapped out to serve the same purpose albeit in a different manner. The following suggestions are an outline and aren't exhaustive.

🔧 Mods 🔧

  • [Growing Power] is useful for a small damage reduction bonus on Desolate Hands and Serene Storm but should be replace if you have any form of external Strength bonuses.
  • [Primed Sure Footed] is necessary for avoiding the [Quick Thinking] stagger. [Pain Threshold] is another option and allows you to save a forma. [Aviator] gives additional damage reduction while airborne but the loss of stagger resistance can be problematic against some enemies.
  • [Adaptation], [Augur Message], and [Constitution] can be considered flex mods depending on what ability you've subsumed. Null Star wants more Duration mods but Quiver or Dispensary can work with far less.
  • [Quick Thinking] and [Primed Flow] are important for survivability as [Baruuk] has low health balanced by his high damage reduction. [Vitality] doesn't solve this issue as it scales off of his base health. Rolling Guard is the only necessary mod in high level content and Quick Thinking becomes a flex mod near the level cap.
  • [Neutron Star] is a quality of life mod to make Null Star feel better in melee range. It can be replaced on builds that only engage enemies from long distances. Of course this doesn't apply when using other subsumed abilities and any mod that fits into the polarity plan will be fine.

⚙️ Arcanes ⚙️

Arcane Energize synergizes with high Efficiency and [Primed Flow] which allows you to be greedy with your ability casts. It can be replaced if you're confident with your energy economy. Offensive arcanes like Arcane Avenger or Arcane [Fury] are usually the call.

Arcane [Guardian] gives a large boost of survivability to a frame with low armor. It can be replaced if you're relying on various forms of invincibility. Tertiary offensive arcanes like Arcane Strike or defensive arcanes like Arcane Aegis are usually the call.

📋 Final Notes 📋

Restraint erosion is dependent on several different factors that may not be optimal on all missions. Serene Storm is strong but you should be paying attention to your average Restraint erosion before you activate the ability. If you're having issues it's better to not activate the ability and to keep the damage reduction from the passive rather than burn it and struggle to erode your Restraint again.

This build may make certain assumptions about mechanics that can change after a patch. Multiple unnecessary forma may be used to facilitate more options across multiple builds with one polarity plan. Certain sub-optimal mods may be run to fit them into the forma polarity plan. We do not make builds that purposely attempt to abuse mechanics that aren't intended by the developers.
