Baruuk: Xata's Whisper/Roar/Warcry - Damage Buffs

Baruuk Gameplay Guide

[Baruuk] utilizes several forms of damage reduction and mild crowd control to survive attacks while eroding his Restraint passive. This passive meter can either be used as fuel for Serene Storm or another source of damage reduction.

📝 Build Overview 📝

This build focuses on buffing Serene Storm or your weapons against various enemies without having to worry about bringing specific elements to a mission. It also takes a different direction in eroding Restraint as the build has to run some Duration to facilitate the use of various buffs.

🔢 Helminth Options 🔢

Lull is replaced as it's far too inconsistent in eroding Restraint with high Duration. Elude has issues with consistency but in this build it isn't expensive and has some viability even with less than optimal Range values.

[Xata]'s Whisper is cheap and provides a chunk of damage against any enemy from any faction. It also provides a way to deal with Sentient enemies as they have status immunity which can cripple the damage from [Reactive Storm].

Roar provides more damage but may be slightly inconsistent against some enemies due to the [Adaptation] mechanic from [Reactive Storm]. It is also far more expensive which can be an issue on this build due to the addition of another ability to upkeep.

Warcry can synergize with a lower Duration variant of this build. The attack speed bonus may have some diminishing returns depending on your build but it also provides survivability with the armor increase and slow effect. The synergy comes from the slow being able to be spammed with lower Duration builds.

Eclipse is conceptually the best buff on this setup but has inconsistency due to its reliance on lighting.

Elemental Ward and Nourish provide some defensive benefits over the other options but require you to use Rage mods to make use of the increased health or healing. Nourish may clash with some weapon builds.

📊 Ability Stats 📊

Strength and Duration are boosted to grant better stats for your subsumed buff. Efficiency is brought back a bit with flex mods but Range is kept at the minimum even if it has negative synergy with Elude.

Helminth Invigorations, Arbitration Buffs, Ally Abilities, Arcanes, and other external stat boosts can save you multiple mod slots but may rely on specific team compositions, loadouts, or sheer luck. Plan around these situations and modify your loadout to hit desired ability stat breakpoints.

⏲️ Duration ⏲️

Duration is boosted to keep the energy economy in check. [Narrow Minded] also has the benefit of lowering the Range on Desolate Hands so that they don't constantly fly off and hit enemies and lower your damage reduction. Elude has negative synergy with [Narrow Minded] but it's still viable to erode Restraint by blocking with a melee weapon. Replace it for anything that fits into the polarity plan if the Range loss is against your playstyle.

⛽ Efficiency ⛽

Efficiency is lowered by Blind Range but brought back up by [Streamline]. [Blind Rage] can be replaced with Transients [Fortitude] and [Streamline] can be swapped with [Fleeting Expertise] at your discretion. The energy economy should still be fine in this setup as Serene Storm doesn't cost energy but more expensive buffs may be difficult to maintain.

📏 Range 📏

Range is lowered by [Narrow Minded] and we don't run mods to bring it back to the baseline. Elude has negative synergy with this setup but Desolate Hands has some positive synergy to make up for it. Elude can still be used if you utilize blocking with a melee weapon to face your camera towards the enemies as much as possible. It's an inconsistent ability even with max Range due to many attacks being considered area of effects damage which can't be evaded. Replace [Narrow Minded] with any other flex mod if Range is a serious issue but it isn't suggested to use additional mods to increase Range due to the previously mentioned inconsistency.

💪 Strength 💪

Strength is boosted high enough to provide decent damage to Serene Storm while also giving Desolate Hands more than 18 charges. At 219% Strength Desolate Hands is able to give allies 9 charges which gives them maximum damage reduction. [Blind Rage] shouldn't hurt the energy economy but [Transient Fortitude] can be slotted in instead when using more expensive buffs. Due to polarity plan constraints Augur Secrets is the only option to slot over a flex mod for additional Strength.

↔️ Alternate Playstyles ↔️

Most builds utilize tools that can be swapped out to serve the same purpose albeit in a different manner. The following suggestions are an outline and aren't exhaustive.

🔧 Mods 🔧

  • [Growing Power] is easy to proc and allows us to hit the 219% Strength breakpoint when not using [Blind Rage]. This build can drop it but the status chance on Reactive Storm is also lowered when using less Strength so other auras are not advised.
  • [Primed Sure Footed] is necessary for avoiding the Quick Thinking stagger. Pain Threshold is another option and allows you to save a forma.
  • [Narrow Minded], [Streamline], and Blind Rage can be considered flex mods depending on your playstyle. Change them to suit your energy economy needs.
  • [Quick Thinking] and [Primed Flow] are important for survivability as [Baruuk] has low health balanced by his high damage reduction. [Vitality] doesn't solve this issue as it scales off of his base health. Rolling Guard is the only necessary mod in high level content and Quick Thinking becomes a flex mod near the level cap.
  • [Reactive Storm] significantly increases the damage of Serene Storm and allows it to adapt to different enemies in the same mission. This build has enough Strength to utilize it so it probably shouldn't be replaced.

⚙️ Arcanes ⚙️

Arcane Energize synergizes with high Efficiency and [Primed Flow] which allows you to be greedy with your ability casts. It can be replaced if you're confident with your energy economy. Offensive arcanes like Arcane Avenger or Arcane [Fury] are usually the call.

Arcane Strike boosts the attack speed of Serene Storm and other melee weapons. This edges out other options due to the reliance on status proc stacking with [Reactive Storm] but other arcanes can be slotted in instead. Tertiary defensive arcanes like Arcane Guardian or Arcane Aegis are usually the call.

📋 Final Notes 📋

Restraint erosion is dependent on several different factors that may not be optimal on all missions. Serene Storm is strong but you should be paying attention to your average Restraint erosion before you activate the ability. If you're having issues it's better to not activate the ability and to keep the damage reduction from the passive rather than burn it and struggle to erode your Restraint again.
