The steel flag of Old War Railjack crews, the Pennant was invaluable in repelling boarders. With each heavy attack kill the Pennant's speed of attack increases.

Pennant - Heavy Slash

This build revolves around using the weapons signature passive to launch a fast barrage of heavy attacks that all have guaranteed slash procs. This leads to the weapon turning into an absolute blender thanks to Slash procs dealing true damage against enemies. This build noticably doesn't use [Primed Fever Strike], but this is due to the fact the weapons damage is coming from slash procs, something that doesn't benefit from that mod.

Why is [Pennant] Special???

A good benchmark for comparison is Lv. 190 steel path elite lancers. Their a common enemey that you'll have to kill in massive quantities. They sit with ~53000 health, meaning that to really claim to be effective, you need to hit a large area and deal that much true damage from a single slash tick. Less then that will lead to enemies surviving an extra second, something that can stack up with time over the course of a mission with them dealing a lot more damage to you.

Two-Handed [Nikana] and Scythes are the only two weapon classes with guaranteed slash procs AND a 6x multiplier on their heavy attacks. Even after checking the best options from other weapon classes, nothing could beat out these two. This narrowed it down to weapons with 29% critical chance or above (bellow that and you run into consistency issues with critical hits), leaving two clear front runners: [Hate] and [Pennant].

[Hate]'s advantage is that it has better damage, though not enough to drop any mods in favor of increased range. [Pennant] on the other hand has much better attack speed thanks to its passive and also better [Follow Through], letting it hit more enemies before one of them survives the first slash proc. This made it so that Pennant is the clear best option for this kind of build, better than any other weapon in the game at it.

Math - Assumes your using Arcane [Fury]

  • Heavy Attack = 242726.4 = 6986 after gong through an lv. 190 Steel Path Elite Lancer's armor
  • One Tick of Slash Proc = 53096.4 TRUE damage
  • Factoring in [Follow Through] damage reduction, you can hit 7 enemies per heavy attack and still kill all of them.

Mod Analysis

  • Sacrificial Steel - This gets the weapon to 200% critical chance on heavy attacks, making it invaluable
  • Sacrificial Pressure - the boost it gives to Sacrificial Steel is enough to make it much better than Primed Pressure Point
  • Corrupted Charge - sets the combo multiplier to a constant 2x, doubling the damage of heavy attacks and their slash procs
  • Focus Energy - Corrupted Charge doesn't quite refill fast enough, but this makes it so that there is no delay in your attacks
  • Amalgam Organ Shatter - Trading 5% critical damage for heavy attack wind up speed is a worthwhile choice
  • Gladiator Might - The extra critical damage helps push the slash proc damage over the edge.
  • Killing Blow - Boosts the Slash Proc damage and helps heavy attacks come out faster
  • Primed Reach - Lets this hit more enemies per attack, increasing the number killed

*note - Need to make sure that Slash procs don't get weaker from [Follow Through]. If yes, a Scythe Zaw version might be the only option.
