Gara Gameplay Guide[Gara] is primarily known for her defensive abilities which provide a unique blend of crowd control and damage enhancement. She can also leverage special interactions between each of these abilities to go on the offensive in various content. Combining the individual strengths of each ability with the scaling damage from their synergies is the key to keeping her relevant in most missions.
📝 Build Overview 📝 Splinter Storm can provide massive survivability for low investment and this build utilizes it along with other survival tools to deal with enemies through the star chart and the Steel Path. There are many ways to supplement the damage reduction from Splinter Storm so variants of this build can have massively different mod configurations. We also use the Mecha set mods but they aren't necessary if you have some aversion towards using Kubrows.
🔢 Helminth Options 🔢 Shattered Lash is useless on this build as the combo with Mass Vitrify will never come up. The other abilities at least provide some level of crowd control and survivability even if they have diminished effects.
Null Star is the best form of damage reduction but it requires high Duration investment and a ranged playstyle.
Elemental Ward, Warcry, and other defensive abilities synergize with Splinter Storm but have some limited applications.
Fire Walker, Spellbind, and other status support abilities fill in the status immunity gap that this tank build lacks.
Other abilities are decent but provide a lot of redundancy due to the existence of operator mode and the previously mentioned abilities.
📊 Ability Stats 📊 Duration is the most important stat on this build with Strength being increased high enough for Splinter Storm to have max damage reduction. This comes at the cost of a lack of mod slots for Efficiency or Range.
⏲️ Duration ⏲️ Duration is maxed to give Null Star 90% damage reduction. [Augur Message] is a flex mod that can either have its ranks reduced or be completely replaced at the cost of minimal damage reduction.
⛽ Efficiency ⛽ Efficiency isn't touched and it shouldn't be necessary on this build. Your energy economy should be fairly self sustaining due to the massive Duration investment but flex mods can be swapped out with Streamline if you're still having issues.
📏 Range 📏 Range takes a hit due to [Narrow Minded] being on the build and we don't have room to bring it back up. Spectrorage and Mass Vitrify will suffer but this build is already extremely selfish in the first place so it shouldn't have a significant impact on the build to lose external defensive options.
💪 Strength 💪 Strength is increased high enough for Splinter Storm to have maximum damage reduction and increasing it further doesn't do much for the build unless it's benefiting the subsumed ability.
↔️ Alternate Playstyles ↔️ Most builds utilize tools that can be swapped out to serve the same purpose albeit in a different manner. The following suggestions are an outline and aren't exhaustive.
🔧 Mods 🔧⚙️ Arcanes ⚙️ Arcane Energize synergizes with [Primed Flow] and keeps your energy topped off. It can be replaced if you have other strong forms of energy recovery either through abilities or other energy support frames. Offensive arcanes like Arcane Avenger or Arcane [Fury] are usually the call.
Arcane [Guardian] synergizes with build focused on raw effective health. It can be less useful when trying to utilize damage reduction on shields so it can be replaced in those scenarios. Tertiary defensive arcanes like Arcane Aegis or Arcane Nullifier are usually the call.
📋 Final Notes 📋 Shattered Lash can break Mass Vitrify to form a pseudo nuke. The Puncture or Slash versions should be used depending on the health type modifier of the average nearby enemy. This also requires you to build your Shattered Lash slightly different as you can't use it like a normal stat stick fueled melee ability anymore. Be careful when trying to spam Mass Vitrify too quickly when setting up this combo as you can get a fake version of the glass shield that's unable to be broken until you cast the ability again.
Splinter Storm can absorb a portion of the explosion from the previously mentioned combo as long as you're outside of the Mass Vitrify walls. This can infinitely stack damage on your shield and you can keep the shield going forever as long as you keep using Mass Vitrify to reset the duration. Be careful cutting the time too close as Mass Vitrify sometimes does not correctly refresh Splinter Storm and you can drop millions of stored damage due to your inability to cast it again.
Splinter Storm can also absorb some of the damage from exploding Spectrorage mirrors but this is nowhere near as consistent as the first combo mentioned above between Shattered Lash and Mass Vitrify.
