Octavia: Base/Breach Surge/Buffs - Offensive Support

Octavia Gameplay Guide

[Octavia]'s kit is able to handle most missions by utilizing buffs, damage [Reflection], and multiple forms of crowd control. Her access to this massive toolbox is balanced by a reliance on doing actions to the beat of her Mandachord. With proper planning and a little rhythm she can become one of the strongest frames in the game.

📝 Build Overview 📝

This build is a more greedy variant focused on getting the most out of her buffs and Mallet damage at the cost of an unstable solo energy economy. This shines when used against strong enemies like event bosses or gimmicky objectives.

🔢 Helminth Options 🔢

Resonator is a great ability on other frames but [Octavia] can rely entirely on Mallet and invisibility from Metronome to crowd control enemies. Mallet and Resonator have synergies that are lost when either is removed. Replace either one to suit your playstyle.

Fire Blast can strip the armor from high level enemies to allow Mallet to kill them at lower damage stacks. It isn't necessary but it solves one of the few things that her kit doesn't have access to which is armor stripping.

Breach Surge can provide exponential returns when combined with Mallet and Amp. There aren't many ways to increase the damage of her Mallet due to an issue explained below and in the notes sections at the end of this guide.

[Rage] from Rest & [Rage] can increase the speed and damage of enemies while they're attacking the Mallet. This is one of the few ways to increase her passive damage.

Buffs need to be carefully chosen due to an intentional nerf to the Helminth system. Roar, Eclipse, and [Xata]'s Whisper will forcibly make you replace Amp instead of her other abilities. Choose them with caution.

Other abilities can work in some scenarios but many will be redundant due to her extensive toolbox and synergies.

📊 Ability Stats 📊

Strength is the primary focus with Range and Duration being kept a bit above the baseline. Efficiency takes a hit as there aren't enough mods to keep every stat above board in a greedy build.

⏲️ Duration ⏲️

Duration is a little above the baseline to benefit her energy economy and make her abilities feel less annoying to recast. Flex mods can be replaced for more Duration but the diminishing returns will most likely make them feel less impactful. Narrow Minded doesn't have this issue but it significantly hurts your Range.

⛽ Efficiency ⛽

Efficiency is lowered by [Blind Rage] and there aren't many ways to increase it without wasting mod slots. Flex mods can be replaced by Streamline if you're having issues keeping multiple abilities active.

📏 Range 📏

Range is important for most of her abilities but we aren't investing heavily into it so that we can save slots. This build is tailored for small rooms or specific enemies but flex mods can be replaced for additional Range in medium sized tilesets.

💪 Strength 💪

Strength is increased to benefit her various buffs and to provide better scaling for Mallet. Augur Secrets is a flex mod and should be replaced with whatever you need at your discretion.

↔️ Alternate Playstyles ↔️

Most builds utilize tools that can be swapped out to serve the same purpose albeit in a different manner. The following suggestions are an outline and aren't exhaustive.

🔧 Mods 🔧

  • [Growing Power] is easy to use and provides free Strength but it can be replaced on builds that focus more on crowd control than buffs or damage.
  • [Conductor] fits into the exilus slot even though it's an augment and allows Resonator to be more consistent. In large tilesets it can be replaced as Resonator won't roam outside of the rooms.
  • [Augur Secrets] and [Stretch] are flex mods depending on the content that you're doing. Refer to the ability stats section above to tailor this build to your playstyle.
  • [Rolling Guard] is a great survivability mod but isn't necessary if you're abusing the invisibility from Metronome. It can be replaced by any mod that fits into the polarity plan.
  • Partitioned Mallet and other augments can be used but many aren't exilus mods so they won't be easily swapped out with Conductor.

⚙️ Arcanes ⚙️

Arcane Energize synergizes with [Primed Flow] and keeps your energy topped off. It can be replaced if you have other strong forms of energy recovery either through abilities or other energy support frames. Offensive arcanes like Arcane Avenger or Arcane [Fury] are usually the call.

Arcane Strike synergizes with the melee meta and grants far more damage per second. It can be replaced if you're using abilities or other weapons as your primary source of damage. Tertiary defensive arcanes like Arcane Guardian and Arcane Aegis are usually the call.

📋 Final Notes 📋

Mandachord is balanced by a rhythm mini-game being added to every ability. This can be made far easier by intentionally adding a note to every single slot and spamming whatever action you're trying to do even if it's out of sync. This makes the song sound annoying and can slightly slow down players that have pitch perfect rhythm but this can be solved by lowering the volume of your song to the minimum either through the options or directly in the Mandachord menu.

Mallet and Resonator have positive and negative synergies with each other. Having one of the strongest crowd control abilities tied to the highest scaling damage [Reflection] ability can have some very annoying interactions. Replacing either ability with a subsumed alternative can alleviate this issue but it can also be solved by using these abilities in large open rooms where enemies have plenty of time to directly attack the Resonator carrying the Mallet.

Amp's sound requirement is unbelievably easy to trigger but there are some specific scenarios where it becomes impossible. By using Silence, a silent Mandachord song, a melee weapon that doesn't have enough range to hit a wall, and weapons that don't create noise when they hit walls, you'll have no way to trigger Amp outside of Operator mode. This perfect storm of problems probably won't come up but be aware of the issue when making Octavia loadouts.
